5th Annual J. Paul Taylor Social Justice Symposium
Justice for Youth
April 14-16, 2009
New Mexico State University Corbett Center Ballrooms
The 5th Annual J. Paul Taylor Social Justice Symposium "Justice for Youth," was held on the NMSU campus April 14-16. The Symposium brought together scholars, practitioners, policy makers, and other stakeholders in juvenile justice, education, and health care. The symposium was an excellent example of NMSU's land grant mission in action through scholarship engaging the issues faced by youth and those in solidarity with youth across our state and region. Keynote speakers included Dr. Michelle Knight-Diop from Columbia University, who presented her scholarship on inclusive, engaging approaches to education with diverse youth, Dr. Pedro Noguera from New York University who discussed his extensive work on dismantling the school to prison pipeline, and Dr. Bruce Trigg from the University of New Mexico who presented research on effective approaches to adolescent sexual health.
New Mexico State University researchers also had an opportunity to present their scholarship and to discuss its application to youth-related issues in New Mexico. Dr. Carlos Posadas from the Department of Criminal Justice presented his work on disproportionate contact with the juvenile justice system of youth of color in New Mexico. Dr. Dana Greene, also from the Department of Criminal Justice discussed her work on restorative justice approaches with youth. Over 300 participants had the opportunity to explore that significance of research findings for our approaches to justice for youth and to engage in meaningful dialogue about how to better serve the young people of our state. This symposium was inspired by the vision of Mr. J. Paul Taylor of a relevant and engaged university.
